Books to Read to Get Ready for Halloween

Halloween is next week, yes next week!  I thought I would share some of my favorite books to read to get ready for Halloween.  Don’t worry, there is something for everyone on this list!

The Horror Book – Anna Dressed in Blood

Book Cover Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake.jpg

Let’s get this one out of the way, this is by far the scariest book on the list.  This book is a horror book through and through, but it is also so much more. This is the story of a terrifying murderous ghost and the boy she learns to love.  That sounds sweet and it is, but there is gore aplenty in this book as well.

The Middle-Grade Ghost Story – City of Ghosts

Book Cover City of Ghosts by Victoria Schwab

Victoria Schwab is hands down my favorite author, and I’ll be honest all of her books are Halloween worthy reads, so you really can’t go wrong with any of them.  This book is for a younger audience, so if you are looking for a light read that isn’t too scary or something to read with a twelve your old, this is for you.  My full review is here.

The Classic – Rebecca

Book Cover Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier

If there was ever a book I wish I could read again for the first time it is Rebecca.  I’ve read it three times now and I love it each time.  This book is full of suspense, so much so that the master of suspense, Hitchcock himself, made it into a movie.  This is truly the original psychological thriller.

The Psychological Thriller – Behind Closed Doors

Book Cover Behind Closed Doors by B.A. Paris

Behind Closed Doors is my go-to thriller recommendation.  I’ve made several friends and family members read it and all of them enjoyed it.  This book is not for the faint of heart, but believe me, you will not want to put it down.

The Quirky Paranormal Book – Jackaby

Book Cover Jackaby by William Ritter

Think Sherlock Holmes meets Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and you have Jacoby.  This whole series is amazing, and every paranormal creature you can think of is in it.  If thrillers aren’t your thing and you are looking for a fun read, this is the book for you.

The One With an Ancient Curse – The Wicked Deep

Book Cover The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw

It wouldn’t be Halloween without an ancient curse, right?  The Wicked Deep was one of my favorite reads last year and it is a great Halloween read, curses, witches, revenge killing, what more could you want? You can read my review here.

The Adult Paranormal – A Discovery of Witches

Book cover A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness

This series has witches demons and vampires.  It also has a great story, and if you are looking for an adult version of say twilight, you should look into this one.  This book is long and starts out a little slow, but if you keep going I can assure you that it’s a great series that is extremely interesting.
