Book Review: City of Ghosts by Victoria Schwab

Synopsis

Cassidy Blake sees ghosts.  In fact her bet friend is a ghost.  When her parents a television ghost hunting duo travel to Edinburgh, Scotland, for their new TV show, Cass—and Jacob—join them.

There, Cass is surrounded by ghosts and learns a little more about herself and her gifts, and fighting the Red Raven.

Review

So I should preface this by saying that Victoria Schwab is one of my favorite authors.  So I am going in bias. I loved the idea of this book. I mean a teenager with a ghost as a best friend is pretty cool! I also loved the setting, Edinburgh has been added to my places to visit list for sure.

I liked the characters, except for the whole ghost thing, Cassidy seems like a pretty normal teenager.  The story overall was interesting, my issues come from the fact that it seems like the setup for a bigger story.  We know next to nothing about Jacob, Cassidy’s ghostly best friend and in a way, this seemed like a preface to his story, so the story didn’t feel finished.

If I am correct and there is more to this story I will gladly read on.  This book was a very quick read, some of that is that it is a middle-grade book, but the story was interesting and kept me engaged.

Overall: 3.5
