The Ugly Duckling
The Ugly Duckling or plain Jane trope is used in all sorts of fiction. You can find it in classic literature, romance, or fantasy. The trope revolves around a character who was objectively “not attractive” becoming attractive. Now I will be the first to admit that this trope is not great. And because most of the characters doing the changing are female there is some major sexism at work here.
Below are some books with the Ugly Duckling trope that I read and found to be least cringy in terms of sexism.
Jane Eyre
Synopsis:
