Short synopsis: Starr Carter a sixteen year old who balances her two worlds, her poor neighborhood and her suburban prep school. But after witnessing the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer.
Initial Thoughts: I really enjoyed this book, but it is not something that was always easy to read, which I think makes it all the more important to read!
Characters: 5 – I loved the characters, all of them!
Plot: 4 – Everything felt real. It was so interesting jumping between struggles with high school friendships one moment, to testifying as a witness to a shooting the next.
Originality: 5 – So original! I haven’t read anything like this before.
Predictability: 4 – This went the way I basically excepted, but the ending! I was so nervous!
Romance: 4 – So I debated including this, cause the romance aspect is so not the point here. But it was cute and I liked it.
This book brings up social issues facing our society in an heartfelt and entertaining way.
